An artistic exploration of loss and new beginnings.
“3Schwestern3” brings Chekhov’s Three Sisters into the tradition of Berlin exile cabaret – a place that combines satirical acuity, resistance and reflection. The play shows the feelings of people who are building a new life: Euphoria, denial, grief and finally acceptance. Six actresses interweave personal stories with dance, theatre and music. Inspired by the Berlin exile cabaret of the 1930s, which gave female artists solidarity and hope in difficult times, the play shows how art can provide strength and orientation in times of upheaval. Then as now, masterpieces are created from change – as with Thomas Mann, Bertolt Brecht or cabaret artists such as Mischa Spoliansky and Friedrich Hollaender. For director Lara A. Treichel, 3Schwestern3 is a declaration of love to Berlin: “Every day I realise how much I love this city.” Berlin stands for diversity and new opportunities. “3Schwestern3” opens doors to real stories that touch. Like Chekhov’s classic, our play poses questions about identity and the pursuit of happiness, but from the perspective of a new beginning abroad. How do we find satisfaction and meaning in a new life? Will part of our identity always be shaped by our country of origin, even after a new beginning?
