Bullseye is the theater piece for the World Darts Championship and brings the spectacle of fat men and small darts from the Ally Pally to the stage. Bullseye celebrates that which high culture turns up its nose at (and stays glued to the television at Christmas) and poses the question: What does darts actually stand for? Is darts a mythical place of return to the proletarian community – before the neoliberal fragmentation? A place where workers celebrate themselves and the heroes of their game? Authentic working-class heroes with non-standardised bodies, who know wage labour and still go to the pub themselves? Is darts the promise of social advancement, born of the ability to hit the target accurately? Or is it just a cool prolo party for the masses? Bullseye examines darts and the white, male working class using the example of the new German number 1.
Stefan Mießeler is Stefan “Social Justice” Mießeler – working-class kid, car mechanic, darts player, body mass index: 34.3 – on the evening of his most important match. Final, all eyes on him, on his way to the top. Will he be replacing oil pans again tomorrow or will he join the ranks of the greats? Wilson, Bristow, Taylor, van Gerwen? Will he be the champion of the proletariat, ready to lead the dispossessed masses in the class struggle?
