The news are constantly dominated by reports about groups such as the Reichsbürger and the neo-Nazi scene in Germany or the Proud Boys and other groups in the USA. Not to mention the increasingly clear shift to the right in politics and society that is taking place in Europe and around the world. For many people around the world, globalization, open borders and diversity have become a threat, as their environment and future prospects feel increasingly insecure. When external stability crumbles, inner insecurity boils over. They seek protection and perspective in an ideology that offers them simple answers to an increasingly complex and changing world.
“Monster Made” is the story of two people who couldn’t be further apart than they are. Amanda Crowley is a lawyer and a strong character who is not intimidated by a man accused of murder and who has committed a heinous massacre. On the other side, Thomas Duncan, who is guilty. There is no doubt about that. It’s a case that’s already lost. Nevertheless, Amanda wants this case. Not to win it, but to understand how someone can become such a monster, and perhaps to set in motion a development that will finally change something, because the question remains: how do we deal with this as a society? How can we live in freedom?
We as a society should not only take note of the riots and the crimes and put the perpetrators in prison, we should ask why someone becomes a monster in order to really be able to initiate a long-term change away from inhuman behavior towards humanity.
